Kantele by Chris Bailey

Review by Mark S. P. Turvin

Writing – N/A

Direction – This type of stop-action video set to orchestral music has been around at least since Koyaanisqatsi, and probably well before. It fits the music, but I imagine that stop-action video fits all types of orchestral music. The choice to change the perspective on the roads to standing rather than driving is a good way to break out of the repetition and lead into the visual changes at the end. The most creative part is the tinting and other visual effects.

Editing – Slick as a music video should be, and a welcome relief when the FX show up later on.

Acting – N/A

Intangibles – “The kantele is the oldest Finnish folk instrument, and is classed as a cordophone, that is, an instrument whose sound arises from a string stretched between two fixed points.” From virtual.finland.fi.

Overall – A nice postcard of the Valley’s freeways, horizon, and sky set to a melodic tune.
